Celebrate September Healthy Aging Month by Giving Yourself a Healthy and Beautiful Smile

“Providing Patients With a Reason to Smile”

We promise to be short, specific, fun and interesting.

So here we go, did you know that this month we celebrate Healthy Aging ? September is a perfect time to celebrate Healthy Aging Month since it is time when many people think about getting started on new tasks after the summer. It’s never late to find a new career, a new sport, passion, hobby or work on your health issues and of course, to have the Smile you always wanted.

The number of Americans ages 65 and older is projected to nearly double from 52 million in 2018 to 95 million by 2060, and the 65-and-older age group’s share of the total population will rise from 16 percent to 23 percent.

Average U.S. life expectancy increased from 68 years in 1950 to 78.6 years in 2017. So that means more meals, more time for us and our love ones, more time to fulfill our dreams.

As we all grow older, certain health concerns earn our full attention, especially the importance of oral health for seniors.

We get one set of permanent teeth, so it’s crucial to take care of them for our entire lives

Older teeth are still susceptible to decay, so it’s vital to continue a thorough oral hygiene program that includes twice daily brushing and flossing, regular cleanings and exams. Mature teeth are more prone to decay around older fillings and at the gum line (root caries).

The risk for tooth decay also increases in people with dry mouth (Xerostomia) that can be caused by medications or radiation therapy to the head and neck. We can suggest a variety of strategies that can help patients with dry mouth.

Untreated gum disease may progress slowly and cause little or no pain, but undetected can damage the gums and supporting jawbone, leading to receding gums and loose teeth and tooth loss. Lack of dental hygiene, tobacco use, poor diet choices and medical conditions can also make periodontal disease more severe.

Older adults don’t necessarily have to give up having a beautiful smile as they age. There are many cosmetic dental treatments that are appropriate for mature teeth, and dental implants and dentures can be both functional and aesthetically pleasing for those who experience tooth loss.
