October is National Dental Hygiene Month
This year, the awareness month is focusing on three routines that can help people maintain healthy smiles: Brush, Floss and Visit Your Dentist.
Good Oral and Dental hygiene can help prevent bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease and can help you keep your teeth as you get older. An unhealthy mouth, especially if you have gum disease, may increase your risk of serious health problems such as heart attack, stroke, poorly controlled diabetes and preterm labor.
“If your eyes are the window to your soul, then your mouth is a mirror of your health.”
What’s the connection between oral health and overall health?
Luke other areas of the body. your mouth teems with bacteria — mostly harmless. But your mouth is the entry point to your digestive and respiratory tracts and some of these bacteria can cause disease.
Normally the body’s natural defenses and good oral health care, such as daily brushing and flossing, keep bacteria under control. However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections. such as tooth decay and gum disease.
How can I protect my oral health?
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day with a sort-bristled brush using fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss daily.
- Use mouthwash to remove food particles left atter brushing and flossing.
- Eat a healthy diet anti limit food with added sugars.
- Replace your toothbrush three months or sooner if bristles are splayed or worn.
- Regular dental checkups and clean.
- Avoid tobacco use.
Also, contact your dentist as soon as an oral health problem arises. Taking care of your oral health is an investment in your overall health.

Cleaning between teeth removes plaque that can lead to cavities or gum disease from the areas where a toothbrush can’t reach.
Interdental cleaning is proven to help remove debris between teeth that can contribute to plaque buildup.
Brushing can help prevent tooth decay, which is the formation of holes on the teeth, a condition that can result in a tooth loss. Brushing also helps prevent bad breath, which may potentially discourage friends, colleagues, and family members from developing deeper interpersonal relationships with you.
